A re-make of the 1979 film of the same name, Going in Style is a comedy-crime film that stars Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Alan Arkin.
The film was quite entertaining but lacked a lot of the pizzazz and “style” (ironically enough) that are important for crime/heist films. (Oceans 11 being an archetypal of this genre.) And while Going In Style had some great moments, it was too safe — a good director takes risks which make great and fun productions. More than once I found myself hoping for a twist, something crazy, but was disappointed time and again.
No pounding heart, no edge of my seat posture; it was mostly predictable.
But hey, it’s conservative approach does make it friendly for all audiences (there is some sexual innuendo here and there, making it not the most family friendly), but I prefer the edgy feel.
Caine, Freeman, and Arkin made for a terrific trio; I truly believed these three had been best pals for decades. They were real and genuinely funny in a not-over-the-top manner. I give them an A for superb acting that altogether made the film enjoyable to watch.
The fantastic threesome of Oscar winners Michael Caine (left), Morgan Freeman (middle), and Alan Arkin (right) showed why they are still at the top of their game despite an at times lackluster film
The music was both great and really not so great. The big band and jazz music was awesome, giving certain scenes that exact “style” needed in a film like this, while film composer Rob Simonsen’s music definitely took away the appeal and allure of certain moments (mainly the big crime scene itself) when more of the jazzy music was needed instead.
While it’s certainly not a great film and there isn’t much to say about it, I recommend Going in Style for families with an age group of 9-young teens. It’s a perfect film to get some pizza, sit down with the kids, and watch in the living room. It’s fun, safe, funny, and it’s three leads help give a charisma to the film despite it’s lack of charm and yes, “style”.
Would I watch it again? I was surprised to hear myself say “yes”.
Yes I would.
